Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford started acting in her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor fit there. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the company's season 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
